Course Descriptions

Training Course Preparation

No prior preparation is required for TCP/signaller or Installer courses.  Attendees taking training and tests for a Supervisor or Inspector should have field experience as an installer.

 

Courses 2, 3 and 4 are quite intensive and packed with information.  As preparation, attendees will find it helpful to familiarize themselves with the OHSA and the construction regulation, and also with the OTM Book 7 Office and Field Editions. All courses are offered either in person or online via Zoom.

 

Attendees of all Courses will be loaned a copy of the OTM Book 7 Office Edition to use in writing the tests.  The tests are all open-book tests.

Training Course Handouts

Attendees of all courses will be given a handout containing copies of most of the presentation slides used in the courses.

Training Course Certificate

A wallet-sized laminated certificate will be provided upon successful completion of any of the training courses, stating the level of course taken. A certification letter will also be provided for record keeping purposes.

Course 1
Traffic Control Persons (TCPs) and Signallers (1/2 day)

This short half-day course is for workers who will work as TCPs and/or signallers, for whom training is required under the OHSA regulations.  Course 1 covers:

 

-         New (and continuing) provisions of the OHSA and regulations relating to TCPs and signallers

-         Book 7 guidelines for TCPs and their application

-         Fundamental Principles of Work Zone Safety

-         Traffic Control Devices the TCP needs to know

-         Objectives of a TCP

-         Requirements of a good TCP

-         Where a TCP may be used

-         Protective Clothing and Equipment

-         TCP Procedures and methods

-         Safety tips

-         Supplements and/or alternatives to TCPs

-         Signaller Procedures and methods

 

A test is given at the end of the course to assess trainees’ comprehension.

Course 2
Traffic Control Installers and Supervisors (Non-freeways) (Module A) (1 day)

This one-day course is for installers (workers) and supervisors and inspectors who will be responsible for or working on non-freeways only (maintenance, construction and utilities).  This course will benefit employers, provincial and municipal road authorities, contractors, engineers, designers, contract administrators, utilities, supervisors, workers, and inspectors. A somewhat abbreviated course is offered to clients who work only on two-lane roads.

-         Course objectives

-         Relevant Standards for work on roads

-         New (and continuing) provisions of the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA) and regulations relating to traffic control in maintenance and construction work zones, as well as to employer, supervisor, and worker responsibilities.

-         Driver needs, capabilities, and limitations: Human factors and positive guidance, and their application to work zone traffic control

-         Comprehensive training on OTM Book 7 requirements and guidelines applicable to non-freeways

-         Use of Book 7

          -         Use of Book 7 tables

          -         Use of Book 7 typical layouts, including set-up and removal

          -         Photos: discussion of real-life non-freeway set-ups.

 

A test is given at the end of the course to assess trainees’ comprehension.  Testing is at two levels: the installer’s test (Test 1) and the supervisor’s test (Test 3), which is more challenging than the installer’s test.

Course 3
Traffic Control Installers and Supervisors (Freeways only) (Module C) (1 day)

This one-day course is for installers (workers) and supervisors who will be responsible for or working on freeways only.  This course will benefit employers, provincial and municipal road authorities, contractors, engineers, designers, contract administrators, utilities, supervisors, workers, and inspectors, who work on both non-freeways and freeways. 

 

Course 3 covers:

 

-         Course objectives

-         Relevant Standards for work on roads

Course 4

Course 4 covers the material outlined above for Courses 2 and 3.
